The inhabited large island of Kefalonia (local name Κεφαλονιά ) is part of (the island group) Ionian Islands and is located in the country of Greece, Southern Europe. The distance to the mainland is about 32 km. The surface-area of the island is 785.7 km2 and is therefore 2.1 x times greater than the island of Isle of Wight. The island lies in the Ionian Sea and the total coastal length is about 250.8 km and the dimensions of the island are approximately 52 km by 23 km (maximum width). The island is North-northwest - South-southeast oriented. The highest point is 1696 meter and is named Ker. Rantar 1696 meter. The coordinates (latitude, longitude) of the island (center) for GPS are 38.22 (38°13'19.1856), 20.57 (20°34'28.4592).


The population is 36404 and the population density is thus on 47.00 inhabitants per square kilometer (compared Isle of Wight 364 inhabitants / km²). The capital of the island is Argostoli (located in the West-southwest of the island). Other places on the island are: Lixouri, Sami. The island is located in the West-southwest of the country Greece. It is located in the administrative unit Region Ionian Islands (local administrative level-name Periféreia - περιοχή ), in the Regional unit Cephalonia (local administrative level-name Nomos - Πειραιάς).
