Description island LesbosThe inhabited large island of Lesbos (local name Λέσβος) is part of (the island group) North Aegean and is located in the country of Greece, Southern Europe. The distance to the mainland is about 9.1 km. The nearest (main) land is Turkey and is not the country to which the island belongs. The surface-area of the island is 1642.3 km2 and is therefore 4.3 x times greater than the island of Isle of Wight. The island lies in the Aegean Sea and the total coastal length is about 352 km and the dimensions of the island are approximately 71 km by 42 km (maximum width). The island is West-northwest - East-southeast oriented. The highest point is 968 meter and is named Olympos. The coordinates (latitude, longitude) of the island (center) for GPS are 39.17 (39°10'12.2916), 26.24 (26°14'31.9344).The population is 90643 and the population density is thus on 55.51 inhabitants per square kilometer (compared Isle of Wight 364 inhabitants / km²).
