Description island São JorgeThe inhabited large island of São Jorge is part of (the island group) Azores and is located in the country of Portugal, Southern Europe. The distance to the mainland is about 1581.2 km. The surface-area of the island is 243.8 km2 and is therefore 0.642 x times greater than the island of Isle of Wight. The island lies in the Atlantic Ocean and the total coastal length is about 133.4 km and the dimensions of the island are approximately 54.1 km by 6.1 km (maximum width). The island is West-northwest - East-southeast oriented. The highest point is 1052 meter and is named Pico de Esperança. The coordinates (latitude, longitude) of the island (center) for GPS are 38.64 (38°38'13.7004), -28.03 (-28°1'4.1286).The population is 8998 and the population density is thus on 36.60 inhabitants per square kilometer (compared Isle of Wight 364 inhabitants / km²).
